What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are components extracted from seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other part of plants or fruits. Although they are referred to as oils, their consistency can range from thin like water to thick like sap. Pure essential oils are translucent yet range in color from crystal clear, deep blue to orange. Essential oils are very aromatic due to the pure essence being extracted from the plant or fruit.

Basics of Essential Oils

When using essential oils, I always recommend the mantra: dilute, dilute, dilute! Since everyone’s skin can react differently to essential oils, it’s best to mix them with a carrier oil for safety.
Carrier oils are essential for sensitive skin, babies, children, and the elderly. By incorporating a carrier oil, you can lessen the oil's intensity while maintaining its effectiveness. Popular options include coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, castor oil, or even shea butter.
*Avoid using water for dispersion, as this will only increase the intensity of the oil

Photo Sensitive Oils

Please note that some oils are photosensitive, meaning they react to UV light such as sunlight & UV lamps. You may apply the oil to a place that will not be exposed to the sun such as the bottom of the feet. If applying to skin that will be exposed to the sun it is best to wait 12 hours. You may still use aromatically or internally with no affects.
